Accurate carbon accounting to support credible sustainability action.

Understanding your organisation’s carbon footprint is the starting point for credible sustainability action. Whether you are meeting a regulatory obligation, preparing for mandatory disclosure, setting science-based targets, or responding to investor requests, accurate carbon accounting is the foundation everything else is built on.

AES provides end-to-end carbon accounting services to organisations across Australia. We measure and report greenhouse gas emissions across Scope 1, 2 and 3 in accordance with recognised international standards, giving you a clear, audit-ready emissions baseline you can act on.

Accurate emissions measurement. Audit-ready reporting. Practical recommendations.

Featured Project

Environmental Management Plans & Inspections

Noosa, Queensland

Applied Environment & Safety provided environmental support to PCA Ground Engineering during road embankment stabilisation works in Noosa, Queensland. These works were important to maintaining the long-term serviceability of the road and drainage infrastructure at this location.

Our role on this project was to provide technical environmental support. This included the development of a Construction Environmental Management Plan, Sediment and Erosion Control Plan, and Rehabilitation Plan. Then we undertook inspections of the works during construction to ensure compliance with the controls for the environmental aspects.

What is carbon accounting?

Carbon accounting is the process of identifying, measuring and reporting an organisation’s greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. It involves defining emissions boundaries, mapping emission sources across your operations, calculating volumes in CO2-equivalent terms using recognised calculation methodologies, and presenting this data in a format that meets reporting requirements and supports informed decision-making.

Standard carbon accounting frameworks used in Australia include the Greenhouse Gas Protocol (GHG Protocol), ISO 14064, and the National Greenhouse Accounts (NGA) Factors, the methodology prescribed for NGER reporting and commonly referenced in voluntary disclosures.

The demand for credible, auditable carbon data has never been higher. Mandatory reporting under the Australian Sustainability Reporting Standards (ASRS) requires large entities to disclose material climate-related information, including greenhouse gas emissions, from January 2025. Carbon accounting that cannot withstand external scrutiny carries real reputational and legal risk, and without a credible baseline, target-setting, abatement planning and progress measurement are all unreliable.

What we include

AES provides end-to-end carbon accounting support, including:

  • Scope 1 direct emissions measurement covering combustion, process and fugitive sources
  • Scope 2 indirect emissions from purchased electricity
  • Scope 3 value chain emissions assessment
  • emissions inventory development and documentation
  • calculation methodology aligned to the GHG Protocol and NGA Factors
  • data quality review and uncertainty assessment
  • emissions reporting for voluntary and mandatory frameworks
  • support for third-party verification and assurance processes

Industries We Support

Applied Environment & Safety provides carbon accounting support for organisations and complex projects across a range of industries.

Why Work With Applied Environment & Safety

We deliver carbon accounting services that are practical, focused and directly useful for reporting and decision-making. Our team understands the technical complexity of GHG accounting and the real-world data constraints that organisations face in collecting emission source data across complex operations.

We work efficiently to produce emissions inventories that are accurate, well-documented and defensible under scrutiny, whether that comes from a regulator, an auditor or an investor. We do not add unnecessary scope or cost, and we work directly with your operations, finance and sustainability teams to build a process that is reliable year on year.

AES is itself a certified carbon neutral organisation. We measure, report and offset our own emissions each year, so we know first-hand what the process of becoming certified carbon neutral involves, from setting the emissions boundary through to offsetting and disclosure. We practise what we preach, and we bring that experience to every engagement.

FAQ’s

Common questions from organisations about carbon accounting.

What is carbon accounting?

Carbon accounting is the process of identifying, measuring and reporting an organisation’s greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. It involves defining emissions boundaries, mapping emission sources, calculating volumes in CO2-equivalent terms using recognised methodologies, and presenting the data in a format that meets reporting requirements.

What are Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions?

Scope 1 covers direct emissions from combustion, process and fugitive sources. Scope 2 covers indirect emissions from purchased electricity. Scope 3 covers value chain emissions across your suppliers, products and services. AES measures and reports all three scopes in accordance with the GHG Protocol.

Why does my organisation need carbon accounting?

Mandatory reporting under the Australian Sustainability Reporting Standards (ASRS) requires large entities to disclose material climate-related information, including greenhouse gas emissions. Investors, lenders and major clients increasingly scrutinise emissions claims, and accurate carbon data is the foundation for credible net zero target-setting and abatement planning.

What frameworks are used for carbon accounting in Australia?

Standard frameworks include the Greenhouse Gas Protocol (GHG Protocol), ISO 14064 and the National Greenhouse Accounts (NGA) Factors, which is the methodology prescribed for NGER reporting and commonly referenced in voluntary disclosures.
